Oregon + Growth = Housing. Introducing House Bill 2001, which will inevitably change the housing dynamic in Bend. If you are a long time local and/or get upset about how fast things are changing, you may want to stop reading now.. (and don't shoot the messenger!) The Oregon State Legislature passed House Bill 2001 in 2019 which requires cities over 25,000 population to allow the development of "middle housing," in an attempt to create more housing inventory and affordable living in Central Oregon. In a nutshell, this allows for more multifamily, ADU and high density development throughout the city. Developers will be getting more creative and the feel of Bend may change in certain areas over the next few years, but hopefully the working class will someday soon be able to afford to live in Bend. My notes from a recent Central Oregon Builders Association meeting detail several large multifamily projects in the works to create more rental inventory as well as a shift towards development that resembles that of a larger city. If you'd like to know more, feel free to reach out. -Greg
